The Global Health Body Sounds Alert Over Acute Shortage of Obesity Medications

Fewer than one in 10 people who could benefit from GLP-1 drugs including Wegovy can access them, caution the World Health Organization as it releases its inaugural guidance on the medications.

With over a billion individuals worldwide currently living with obesity, it is advocating for more widespread and fairer access to this class of drugs.

Per estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The new guidelines recognises that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be managed with comprehensive and lifelong care," remarked its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are major obstacles to widespread access to the injections that can aid individuals in losing substantial body mass, explains the organization.

GLP-1 Therapy Supply Crisis

Despite the present most optimistic case, the production of such drugs might only reach around 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, as stated by the health organization.

The guideline encourages nations and manufacturers to widen availability, via strategies such as licensing agreements.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the main component of a leading brand – is due to expire in several nations in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Jabs Operate

The injections replicate a biological compound to slow digestion, curb appetite and increase the sense of being full so users eat less.

People commonly begin shedding pounds after several weeks of starting on the once-weekly jabs.

Studies points to people may put most of the weight back on within a year of halting the treatment, when their typical appetite come back.

Being above a healthy weight increases your likelihood for contracting health problems, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and specific cancers.

Excess weight affects individuals in all nations and was responsible for over three and a half million fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the health agency.
